Commercial truck officials are welcoming the news of falling diesel prices, even if it’s only temporary. As the demand for trucking services continues to grow that means more jobs for professionally trained truck drivers, but that also means more trucks on the road and more fuel consumption for truck carriers all across the country that are trying to keep up with the rising demand.
Last week it was announced that the average price of diesel had fallen for the first time in 12 weeks. The nation-wide average for diesel last week was $4.086 per gallon, according to the Energy Information Administration of the Department of Energy. The 4.9 cents decrease was good news, but the average price still stands at 43 cents higher than the average in early July and 30 cents higher than it was a year ago, according to the Department of Energy.
The dropping diesel fuel prices come at a time when oil trading has also decreased. Oil trading fell more than 6 percent last week to a price of $109.81 a barrel, or $1.61 lower than the previous week. Oil has now fallen five of the last six trading days as of Sept. 24 and it fell more than 6 percent the week before.
The drop in oil prices is an indication that many industries continue to struggle through an economic recovery. When production and spending is down, so is oil consumption, which drives the price down. However, the demand for commercial trucks continues to rise, bucking the national trend. While other industries – such as construction and manufacturing – are just starting to see an uptick in business, the commercial trucking industry has been growing strong for the past few years.
